Facebook outage offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the social network's AI 'sees' your photos
Insider ^ | 07/03/2019 | Zoe Schiffer

On Twitter, people shared screenshots of how their photos were tagged. "To be fair, 'one person, beard' is pretty much a spot-on description of me," Zack Whittaker, an editor at TechCrunch, wrote.

Facebook automatically scans all photos on the social network with facial- and image-recognition software powered by AI to detect who or what is being pictured.

At times, it appeared the AI incorrectly tagged the photo, as in the case of the Fortune reporter Danielle Abril's where the photo description read: "5 people, including Danielle Abril, people smiling, people standing, hoes and indoor." Hopefully there was a gardening tool in the photo — we've reached out to Abril but did not immediately hear back.

So while there could be a benign explanation here, it's still a stark reminder of just how much data Facebook is gathering at all times, even when we don't realize it's happening. Thanks to its increasingly sophisticated AI technology, Facebook can even gather information from something as innocuous as a vacation photo.

I noticed it, too, the labeling of the images inside picture posts. *sigh* :-/

Interprets photos for blind users. Right, that’s the excuse.

I’ve actually seen these descriptions before. If a photo takes time to load, such as when Firefox starts gobbling up RAM space, the description will appear in the image outline.

DANG!

The better bet, for those who are able, is to buy stock in the companies and then show up and complain at the shareholders’ meetings. The company is so frickin’ large that if we all dumped facebook, we just ceded a huge part of the battlefield to that same enemy.

Indeed, using text and wassap is all one need to keep in touch with real friends. Facebook ‘s only addition is the trash friends.

Facebook is building a data profile on you even if you don’t have an account.

AnonJayElBee is 00101101010 a recurring figure, still unidentified in several photos posted by Sally Greenstreet. Sometimes in the background, sometimes as a figure in the group. One day Sally’s sister tags names on one of the photos of 00101101010 and more data is added to the profile (beyond, associate of Sally Greenstreet in the Heights district of Mapplewood, Virgina, USA)...

Sometimes 00101101010 is seen wearing sponsored t-shirts. All for the permanent record.

But not having a facebook account doesn’t mean that they aren’t datafarming you.
