As you read this, around 10,420 giants are heaving their way across the worlds oceans
Engineers believe it is possible to use the vast hull of oil tankers to create floating power stations that can convert the ocean swell into electricity. This is the ambitious plan to create the worlds first waveships.
It works like a giant piston, says Florent Trarieux, a renewable energy engineer who led tests on the waveship concept in scale models at Cranfield University. We would put a turbine at the top of the chamber that is driven by the air as it is pulled back and forth by the water. We could put these in columns all down the length of a ship like an oil tanker.
A very large tanker could have up to 35 moon pools, each 20m in diameter, they say.
A group of Dutch architects have also proposed turning old supertankers into floating public villages that contain shopping malls, concert venues, museums, swimming pools and a public park on the top deck. But the firm behind the concept, Chris Collaris Design, say they have yet to find anyone brave enough to take the concept further.

Sounds like a job for Kramerica Industries.
They could rake it in with the bottle deposit scheme!
Cool, Ima gonna look for one on eBay...
Yes it is. It was a San Clemente tanker. The USNS Comfort was the SS Rose City. I sailed on her sister ship in 1983 and 1984, the SS Worth, now the USNS Mercy. As I recalled I left the ship in Pembroke, Wales in February, 1984. We had learned that the Worth was going to be converted to a hospital ship.
I’ve got capital to invest. Sounds promising. How large are the birds?
The last time I heard of a ship with a moon pool was the Glomar Explorer, and it did not come cheap.
The Worth (USNS Mercy) and the Rose City (USNS Comfort) were in very good condition when sold to the Navy. But yes you are correct old ships go to the bone years in Pakistan and
Bangladesh.
Those aren’t buoys!
They will be useful in the future when the planet is covered with water.
But, I thought global warming was going to give us fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...
Can it go both ways?
Yes, I have seen ice boiling, but only in a vacuum; does that come with global warming?
Ive got capital to invest. Sounds promising.
We will happily send you a prospectus.
The investments and services offered by us may not be suitable for all investors. If you have any doubts as to the merits of an investment, you should seek advice from an independent financial advisor.
And as a complimentary service, we have a qualified Nigerian Royal Financial adviser on staff.
That’s actually not a bad idea.
If the ship goes up and down with the tide, could you not set up a system of pullies and weights and counterweights, like a cuckoo clock?
You might not get any power out of it, but you’d get a cool animatronic show ever hour!
Cool, Ima gonna look for one on eBay...
Be sure to watch the shipping costs!
Some unscrupulous types put them up very cheap and get you on the shipping.
Also, some claim a US address then ship from China on an old slow boat.
For some reason I get the picture of Water World in my mind.
If the ship goes up and down with the tide...
I’d be concerned about it going down and not coming up, ever.
For some reason I get the picture of Water World in my mind.
Were you the guy that sat through the entire movie?
Hey, I’m a land guy! I’m lucky if I can unhook the boats from the place!
This is all bull crap as an engineer this been starting renewable energy for 30 years I can tell you that wave power is by far the most difficult to try to harness because youre dealing with the ocean
The ocean is constantly in motion , is salt water, and has highly variable conditions
Water can be an excellent source of electricity but you have to have a height or a drop for the water to generate power
Look kids photovoltaics sit there and make electricity - you dont get easier than that
In fact there is nothing else on planet earth it makes electricity just sitting there without moving parts
Giant eye dropper on the right?
They would make great Prison Ships. Anchor them 50-100 miles offshore and drop food and supplies once a month with a helicopter. Prisoners would be only the worst of the worst so they could set up their own system for running things and if the population started to decline drastically so what. We can always send more new prisoners out. This could cause sweeping reductions in the number of violent crimes committed.

Kramer’s intern in that one was great.
