I am a recovering American. This is a major admission on my part. Since moving to Canada in 2017, Ive kept this part of my identity hidden from everyone except my closest friends. Its a fairly easy sleight-of-hand. Ive lived in various parts of the United States so Im not easily pegged by any regionally-identifiable accent. The rest was simply a matter of a few linguistic somersaults: saying washroom instead of restroom; parkade, not parking lot; chatting at dinner parties about stratas rather than condo boards; and casually ordering deli meats by the gram (thanks to the conversion app on my phone). And to my utter delight, if my dirty little secret is revealed the universal response has been: Youre American? But you seem so nice!
To address the elephant in the room quite literally, I suppose, since its the mascot of the Republican Party yes, the tipping point for my relocation was the 2016 presidential election. Yet, I wasnt one of those people who wrote angry Facebook posts and threatened to leave the country if Hillary Clinton didnt win. That seemed overly dramatic until, well, until the unimaginable actually happened.
I know some of my American friends think I took the easy route the cowards path, if you will. To the people who question my decision, I respond, Do you really think its that easy to just pick up and leave the country where you were born and lived your entire life? But the day after the election and this is actually hard to really put into words I just felt a seismic shift in my overall sense of well-being and thought, Ive got to get out of here.

And just look at what they have tried to do to Jordan Peterson.
Has he recovered yet? His biggest issue lies in between his ears.
I lived in Victoria for three years and actually missed winters, for the most part. I do remember one snow, but generally was a matter of cold drizzle. Milder and much less rain than Vancouver, just across the strait.
Yeah.. I’m not an international arms smuggler. Not normally. I mean, there was this incident in Mexico one time. But it was completely accidental. All I can say, is that a Mexican Army lieutenant and his soldiers sure did right by me.
And no, didn’t even ask for a bribe.
Interesting article. I like Greenfield
The history of Canada overlooks the past sins you often hear Canadians criticize America over.
They had an African slave trade (significant if you adjust for their population) and enslaved many of the native people (Canadian Indigenous People) and few people (to include Canadians) know it.

Canada is a beautiful country and I generally like the people in “flyover country” as we have much in common, but overall the country is much like Washington State. The progressive majority in the large cities dominates the more rural areas with a touch of French arrogance that is hard to describe to most people who are not familiar with it.
What have they tried to do? I never heard of him until googling just now. He makes a lot of sense, but has slipped over the edge in some areas. He believes in dragons and witches. He thinks the cure for crazy guys driving into crowds of people is enforced monogamy. That means making women take what’s out there and stop leaving so many guys single.
And no, didnt even ask for a bribe.
Not one fek given.
Glad hes gone. Dont let him back in.
Oh yeah, its a beta Male.
I am a recovering American. Correcton: You are a former American who has chosen to forsake the country that gave you life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Goodbye and please do not ever come back.
Just wait until this loser needs serious medical care. He’ll be rushing back to the USA.
Canadians think because they have ‘’free health care’’ that qualifies them for being heaven on Earth and we in “The States’’ are a bunch of racist, ignorant, gun toting rubes. Don’t believe me, go to You Tube and searching for videos about them raving about their ‘’free health care’’ and see what they think of us. I hate Canadians.
This dud obviously feels the need to justify his traitorous actions. His gut if full of remorse or he would not be spewing his so called secret all over the internet. Save it pal, not many of us want to hear it. I know I sure do not. You made your choice, now enjoy living in a country where no rights are guaranteed, just at the whim of the government. One word of advice: Do not say something the government thinks is hateful or disrespectful to a single protected person. You will be in jail quickly.
OHIP, the Ontario health insurance plan is funded by payroll deduction tax, businesses in Ontario, and by transfer payments from the Government of Canada.
Premiums deducted from your paycheck negate ‘free health care’ at the very outset.
Saying you hate Canadians is no different from Canadians who say they hate Americans. A pox on both of you.
Lawrence Karol:”I just felt a seismic shift in my overall sense of well-being and thought, Ive got to get out of here.”
We couldn’t be happier, Larry, you old leftist snowflake you. Now, try to convince your leftist buddies to move there and join you.
Well bye! Don’t come back!
Even non-serious medical care sucks.
Remember what it was like going to the post office?
Few service windows were open, despite there
being a long line. When you got to the front,
the clerk was unfriendly, officious, and lazy.
You could see back behind the counter postal workers
lounging around, looking contemptuously at customers.
That’s what a visit to a regular, non-emergency
clinic ‘health’ clinic was like.
