Grand, old Flag
My flag was old and faded
From its time out in the sun
My wife said, for the weekend
We should get a better one
So I went to the Home Goods store
And asked the hardware guy
He said that I could find them
On the end of aisle I
I took a while getting home
Honey, whereve you been?
Then I put the new flag up and
Took the old one in
I held it very carefully
Didnt let it touch the floor
And then I heard it speak to me
It didnt do that before
It told me it was happy
I had hung it where I did
And how it liked protecting us
Me, my wife and kid
It told me how it loved the sun
And how it loved the shade
And how it loved to lead us
In our neighborhood parade
Though none of us who marched with it
Had ever served a day
It was proud to walk with us
(I guess its made that way)
Burn it if you want to
No, you dont have to stand
Without your kind assistance
Our flag will still be grand
And you may think Im foolish
But I say this with all candor
As the flag gets older
My goodness, it gets grander
