Dozens of vehicles struggled through a 'muddy mess' of a road on Sunday after they followed directions from Google Maps that offered a short cut to the Denver International Airport.

Connie Monsees, a Highlands Ranch native, used her Google maps app to divert around a traffic jam on Pena Boulevard on Sunday. She soon wound up on the muddy off-road.

'It eventually took me to a road that...became dirt,' Monsees explained on an ABC News podcast. 'I was not the only one, there was probably a hundred cars out there.'

There is a ridge that you drive along to get to the airport. It’s VERY Steep on the side. There is a chance that the traffic was made to jump off (And yea, roads there change all the time with new ones coming and going to different parts of the airport property which is HUGE)

I can see this happening.

And everyone please do a reality check.

I heard of a case, where someone driving a rental car in an unfamiliar area, followed directions which took him down railroad tracks.

Apparently he didn’t notice he wasn’t on a normal road.

As luck would have it, the train came and totaled the car. Luckily our driver got out in time.

Use GPS, an actual printed map, and common sense all in concert, and you should get to your destination.

Probably trying to get around the Toll Road which is the primary way to get to Denver Airport

Did Google suggest the diversion to ALL drivers, or just those who are known to frequent conservative websites (or search on conservatives)?

Don’t laugh.

“Four wheel drive and high ground clearance are a real advantage out there!”

It would have to be high enough to drive over the stuck vehicles behind you and in front of you.

There are two locations where we regularly give directions to friends. We caution them not to use gps.

the color of the road on a paper map tells you what kind of road it is...

There are major highways all the way there from Denver proper.

And they're all parking lots. Bumper to bumper traffic and you won't find a single person in it who was actually born in Colorado.

Sure ... but it’s not always completely accurate. I’ve had issues with that in WV.

I just took on a new position at work managing a new onsite product demonstration trailer.

I don’t need a CDL license but since it’s a commercial vehicle, I need to follow all the rules. Especially in the northeast, there are plenty of roads I can’t travel on.

My GPS is not optimized for truckers. A couple months ago, I was trying to bypass NYC and ended up at one such restricted road.

New York doesn’t give out state maps at their “welcome Centers”. I spent an hour poring over map sites looking for trucker maps and finally had to subscribe to a trucker version of Waze.

I’m heading up that way in a couple weeks and am ordering a trucker optimized GPS unit (at company expense)
