The 1812 Overture is like Carnival of the Animals. A composition that towers over the rest of the composer’s works, even though the composer never intended it to be that way. Saint Saens knew that would happen with Carnival of the Animals, and he prevented it from being published during his lifetime.

He would have been delighted that "Samson and Delilah" became a staple of the operatic world but would have been mystified that his "Danse macabre" became instantly recognizable every Halloween.
