A small, twin-engine plane used for skydiving crashed in the Hawaiian island of Oahu on Friday, killing all nine people aboard, authorities said. Names of the victims weren't immediately released.

The King Air plane burst into flames upon hitting the ground near the Dillingham Airfield around 6:30 p.m. local time. The airfield will remain closed until further notice, officials said.

There were six employees and three customers on the flight, said Tim Sakahara of Hawaii's Department of Transportation, citing preliminary information.

Witnesses said the plane appeared to have problems during takeoff, noticing that it was unsteady on the runway.

I always wanted to fly the Dehavilland DC9
I've flown in an Otter twice, a Beaver and a Grumman Goose maybe a dozen times each when we lived in Juneau. Mostly for work and deer hunting trips, all on floats. Lots of fun.

It’s called a PILOT. You take a pen and a paper and add up all the weights and how far forward or back they are. You plot the result is a graph that’s called the CG envelope. I do a complete weight and balance calculation every time I go up. I once had to add 55 pounds of ballast in the luggage compartment because my CG was too far forward.

It’s not cool, it’s not sexy, but the math will never fail you.

“My point is it was a short runway.”

Don’t extrapolate from jets and vectored thrust to civilian prop planes.
