From what I’ve been reading about British police lately, it is obvious they aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer.

It is, in fact, a VERY British thing to do.
Back in the days of sail, a knife was part of every sailor’s toolkit and they carried them constantly.
On long voyages, where tempers might wear thin, the captain of the ship would have the tip cut or broken off every knife with a blade over 4 inches long.
The logic was that a 4 inch knife could stab all the way to the heart.
