What a great story! Was he as funny in person, as he was while performing?

Actually, no. The Bob Hope I dealt with was friendly and businesslike.

On occasion, Bob's head writer would get one over on him. One day in the 1970s when he was at Bob's Toluca Lake mansion, Bob began grousing about a stock manipulation he had missed in 1935. The writer looked at the palatial surroundings and said, "Yeah, Bob, you could have been on Easy Street."

Delores Hope was active with Catholic Charities. One day Bob interrupted a work session at his mansion to go down to Burbank Airport with his head writer to pick up Dolores who had just flown in. She departed the airplane surrounded by Catholic priests. Hope said, "Why doesn't she buy flight insurance like everyone else?"
