Newt Gingrich: Hong Kong democracy protests are a critically consequential moment
Fox News ^ | June 2019 | Newt Gingrich

July 1 is the 22nd anniversary of the handover from Britain to China. In recent years, this date has been used by democracy activists to protest and communicate their desire for genuine self-government. This year, July 1 could turn into a genuine test of the concept of one country, two systems.

If Xi exercises disciplined restraint and allows Hong Kong to evolve, we will be in a vastly different world – and may be able to talk about a long-term evolution from dictatorship toward freedom for China.

If, on the other hand, he moves to crush dissent and to impose totalitarian controls on Hong Kong, we will be in a much more serious challenge to freedom across the planet.

This is a critically consequential moment that matters to all of us – not just to the more than seven million citizens of Hong Kong. Now, we must wait and see what Xi decides.

So was Tiananmen square.

GHW Bush rewarded the communist Chinese with more trade and huge chunks of our manufacturing.

I just hope China doesn’t go full Tiananmen on them. Because once you think there’s no possible way, China will do it. China plays a long game, short term pain is acceptable.

Not really, Newt

The average mainland Chinese, to the extent they even hear about HK protests, doesn’t care.

I was stationed in So Cal working with aerospace during this time. The large corp I was attached to was starting to do some small commercial mfg with Chinese companies back then, even sending them the tooling. I said “What the h*ll!” Young Captains don’t carry much weight in the big scheme of things.....

This taking people off Island for trial is a bad thing. The British were attempting to do that prior to our Revolution. The reason we burnt the Gaspee was because the captain wanted to take prisoners out or RI for trial. We wouldn’t put up with it then. It’s almost an exact parallel.
