Did Mom and Dad present an imminent, grave and reasonable threat to the off duty officer s well?

They may have been trying to rescue their son, who was in the process of being killed, or even trying to pull him out of an argument before the shooting. Or, they might have been going after "a bad guy with a gun" (they likely had no idea he was a cop). At this point, as bad as it looks, we just don't know what happened. Still, it's hard to imagine a situation that required shooting the whole family.

There should be video from several cameras. Hopefully the parents survive and can give their side...

I’m also thinking they were in the line of fire.

“Still, it’s hard to imagine a situation that required shooting the whole family.”

Hard to imagine? I don’t know about that. I don’t know what happened here, but I can imagine a situation. You’re holding your young child when someone does something that makes you think it’s necessary to shoot them so you do. Then two people run up to you, still holding your young child, screaming “You shot my son, you blankety-blank, I’m going to kill you.” (What would you do if you were the parents in this situation?) Again, you’re still holding your young child, you believe you are both threatened, you’re maybe in a little bit of shock from the first shooting, and you’ve had no time to stop and think because this all took place in seconds. What would you do? How much risk would you put your young child in?

Like I said, I don’t know what really happened here, but I can imagine a situation where someone might at least think shooting the whole family was required.
