Just an example of their accounting tricks (my brother-in-law worked in the accounting dept. at Tri Star): If a movie has a chase scene and a parked car is hit, that is a write off for the cost of that car. Later another parked car is to be hit. They take the same car, turn it around, paint it a different color and boom: second write off is obtained.
Small tricks like that are legal and plentiful in the industry.
It does appear you’re wrong. The production budget for MIB International is reported to be $110 million. That does not include marketing, which is separate. Of course there’s no way to know for sure what the exact numbers are. As you point out, studio accounting is shady at best. The distributor gets a smaller percentage of overseas revenues compared to domestic, but spends much less for promotion, etc. Suffice it to say that after TV rights and DVD sales this flick will make money but it’s not a blockbuster.
