Recently I received a letter from the bank where I have my safety deposit box. It stated that users "can no longer store gold bullion or non-collectible domestic or foreign currency in your box."

This has been the case for at least ten years. At least at my bank.
It has to do with liability in case of a robbery.
Buy a fireproof safe and have it bolted to your floor.

I dont think it is anything new, My mom told me she got the same notification 3 or 4 years ago from Chase when she changed to a smaller box.
