I used to read a lot of Civil War history, and the NYT was even then as bad as any of the New York newspapers with regard to lies, speculation, opinions as "facts," and releasing of sensitive information (some of which did get US soldiers and sailors killed).* The Russian Revolution of 1917 just gave the New York Times a new deity to worship, it didn't make them reprehensible overnight.

*Gen. William T. Sherman refused to meet with NY Tribune publisher Horace Greeley some time after the war; Greeley got off light.
IIRC the NYT printed articles by Will Durant (in the 30s???) who went to the USSR and wrote how wonderful communism was and the glorious USSR. I think he got the Pulitzer prize for those articles.
Probably someone knows the facts and can correct if need be.
