Direct from this New York Times article about New Hampshire needing more diversity:

"New Hampshire, like its neighbors Vermont and Maine, is nearly all white."

Those three states are numbers 1-3 here. Coincidence?

They are also rural, Vermont and Maine are poor, and they winters can be brutal. When you have to rely on the guy next door to help pull you out of a ditch, you are not going to rob or steal from them.

Those states tend to be pretty religious. Of course, southern Maine and NH are pretty much Massachusetts.
