He couldn't shake it off, I'd bet that 70 degrees nose down in that bird at that altitude is what would be termed 'Unusual Attitudes' that are normally practiced well above where he was, but since he didn't have an Instrument card, it is possible he had never done any He recovered from that but not from his vertigo. And he had to have vertigo, because he ended up planting it. Either that or he was a crappy pilot, but his history doesn't support that conclusion.
