It looks similar but larger than those monstrosities built West of Taos across the bridge, north side of the road. Earthships, they call them.
Green houses, I call them.................
It is a fine idea if the group can get it built and people will choose to live there and the government does not subsidize anything. I suspect none of the ifs are realistic assumptions, though.
I recall a book on a friend’s bookshelf back in the early 80s...By Paolo Soleri, an Italian architect I believe, filled with pix of all sorts of hive-like and huge structures designed to house tens of thousands of people...
Arcosanti was supposed to be his opening work and sort of a proof-of-concept project...Never looked to like anywhere I’d want to live...Better suited to ants and bees, IMHO...
Apparent...Hippie...Fail...Surprised?
I remember reading a financial statement once and all of the profits were in concessions.
“Only by car” indicates a major fail under green-hippie axioms.
Per their standards, the area should primarily (and only, insofar as alternatives can be discouraged) accessible by taxpayer-funded carbon-neutral public transit (i.e.: solar-powered electric train).
When an Adobe building is abandoned, it will eventually melt back into the earth.
When the “earthships” are abandoned they will degenerate into big trash piles in the desert.
From the article:
"The Italian architect who originally envisioned the city, Paolo Soleri, called his ideas "urban implosion" because he wanted to reduce the suburban sprawl that is a feature of many American cities. He also invented the concept of Arcology, a way of thinking about urban design that's in harmony with the natural world and more sustainable."
That's also how the setting was referred to in the book as well ...
It will eventually become a popular set for science fiction movies.
People who live in glass house shouldn’t get stoned........................or run around naked................
Well I learned something new!
A new word - Arcology.
Never wrong to increase one’s vocabulary even if the word might have somewhat “shaky” origins.
I misspelling this work - Archaeology !
One word. Water.
Look at all the shrubs and trees.
Gonna water those with wash water? Well..
I love Arizona (the arid zone). I visit often. We ride horses in the desert.
But I live on the water planet. Like interior Alaska in the winter, life in Southern AZ in the summer is critically dependent on technology which may not always exist.
You mean like in the toilet?
Yep, a ‘future’ setting that was a failure.............
Ignorant utopian dreams not founded in any practical realities. It was never going to be a success. Donors money down the drain.
...oh. Nevermind.
But it doesn't have electrolytes!
I’ve stayed with friends at an Earthship in Colorado. It was stunningly beautiful and comfy. Of course, the owner was a wealthy man who could afford to make it that way.
Egads! her beard is bigger than mine!!!!!...............
