Air guns can work humanely, but you need a decent caliber and velocity. Don't shoot 177 caliber.

I recommend a Girandoni air rifle designed by Tyrolian inventor Bartholomäus Girandoni. .46 caliber, 210 grains, 500 fps. They hit hard and do the job very humanely. Unfortunately, they are a bit hard to find these days.
