I talked with a young person and was told that D-day was un-needed and all those lives were lost for nothing because everyone knew Hitler would lose. In a year we would have the atomic bomb and could have blown Hitler up in his bunker in Berlin and ended the war—do the same thing to Japan. Once the USA entered the war it was over. There was no way the allies could have lost. The young men who died on the beaches were not to be honored —they should have stayed home. Thats what kids learn in college these days.
And where does this idiot think all that fallout would have landed?
Hitler probably would’ve lost eventually to the Soviets. However, then all of Europe would’ve been under Soviet rule. I’m sure that “almost” event is taught as being a real tragedy for not happening, too...
In June of 1944 no one knew if the atomic bomb was practical. In June of 1944 no one knew if the Nazis were going to be able to build their own atomic weapon, they certainly would use it if they did. Advise your young friend that they should ask their school for their money back they have been sold a pack of lies. If they refuse ignore them they're too dumb for you to reason with.
I'm 68. A friend my age, whom I've known all my life, has a similar thought about Japan.
In his case, the atomic bombs were unnecessary. It was going to be over soon.
My response is always one word : Okinawa
How very sad.
Such ignorance. How very sad.
