How do you and your family of four patrol your 20 acre SHTF compound 24/7/365 to keep out the bad guys?

What an idiotic post. If there is some sort of download limit it is because I have put up so much info you can’t get it all in one go, and that’s supposed to be a bad thing? It says right on your screenshot that all you have to do is wait to continue for free or split it up over a couple of days and download individual sections that interest you.
But you have performed a public service in your own way. I didn’t know there were download limits on people who wanted the information, just upload limits on people like me who want to fill the site. So how much do you suggest I delete in order to not inconvenience you?

We had a miniature dry run here in NJ with Hurricane Sandy, and one item rarely mentioned that is handy is a bicycle. There was no gas available (though diesel would be available in home oil tanks), and it would be a good way to get around.

Thanks for all the work you put into compiling this info. I haven’t seen it yet, but wanted to add a book called WHEN THERE IS NO FEMA by Richard B Bryant to your listing if it isn’t already there. I believe Mr. Bryant is or was a Freeper.

I have found the information very helpful and have followed recommendations in it with success.

Thanks for the key and link. I’d have replied privately, but the ‘new user, so you’re blocked’ timer is still ticking, apparently.

By using a centrally-located flying platoon (of 3) to supplement to solo sentinel (accompanied by a canine)circling the compound. Nobody sleeps under this arrangement...

There are 39 million fuel oil tanks to supply your diesel not to mention hundreds of thousands of semi’s stranded on the highways.

Get a short wave radio and a direct injection diesel vehicle, and a manual generator, and you have started prepping.

You inspired me with that post and now, thanks to you, the KB is getting its first audio files, a course in learning Morse Code. I figured it would be better to hear what it sounds like rather than reading dots and dashes off of a piece of paper. I also put up some material on ham radios. Thanks for the helpful suggestions.

Most SHTF scenarios, in order of likelihood, do not involve EMP’s or roving bands of marauders. But, if you want the ultimate in prepper security, find an abandoned surface shaft coal mine. You only need the first 100 feet or so. GPS probably still works unless there is a global nuclear war, so advance locations for meetup or shelter are easier to find than years ago.

I know - I mentioned the heating oil in #25.

And, I am sure you also know that diesel, unlike gasoline, can be handled safely with battery operated pump and transported in carboys.

I’m not sure of your point; I was including the home heating oil as a viable energy source, not knocking it.

The problem we had after Sandy is that people with generators primarily had gasoline generators, and they couldn’t refuel them. When gas became available in stations, one line was set up for pedestrians carrying gas cans while the rest of the pumps services autos. Cops were present but not needed; people were actually very friendly.

Don’t assume people are disagreeing with you. I think we are working toward the same point. Diesel is one of the main bases for SHTF prepping. Most scenarios are days and weeks not months and years. Gasoline is an hourly resource. When we had an ice storm here, the gas stations ran out of fuel in one day. All of them. Most, the same day. And, smart people with generators had 5 gallons of gas on hand which lasted through the first night. A 32 gallon drum of fuel oil in the back of the garage would have solved a lot of problems.

My apologies if I misunderstood.

The first problem we had was the gas stations couldn’t get it out of the underground tanks because there was no electricity; then they could pump it and quickly ran out. We were fortunate because the storm hit in late October when it wasn’t yet too cold in northeastern NJ; within a couple of weeks the temperatures dipped and while most of us had power restored already several low-lying areas (not just the shore points, but also places like Hoboken) were still without electricity. I camped a lot in my younger years, so I had good sleeping bags for the whole family if we had to deal with colder temperatures (though if they fell too much, I’m not sure how freezing pipes could be avoided).

At the time I read about several different generators that used diesel; we still have many homes in the area using home heating oil (and the tanks are hundreds of gallons - from 250 to 500+), and those generators would certainly seem a better option. As I mentioned initially, it was a good dry run for the area; we learned what worked and what didn’t, and what we needed to keep on hand. I saw it as an opportunity to use up old military MREs (we had plenty of food, but since we didn’t know when everything would return to normal I saw no point in going through it first). While we had no electricity, we at least still had our natural gas (so stoves worked for cooking).

I found the most useless items to be radios (battery-operated and hand-cranked) simply because there was no news to report, and cellphones (since the towers were without power; it was difficult to get a signal). The authorities themselves seemed to be playing it by ear, and I really learned nothing from listening.

Your observations are right on point. Here, the ATM’s ran out of money because the roads were impassable and the electricity was off in a lot of places. Some Atms on the side of a bank worked but were limited to small amounts. I was glad to have a few thousand in the freezer even though I did not end up needing it.

One interesting thing. I have natural gas steam heat and the electric requirements are next to nothing. Gas valve, thermostat, water refill valve. I had a marine deep cell battery back up with an automatic switchover and it was warm at my place the whole time.

In retrospect, I think a pto from the truck and a pto driven generator would be a good thing.

That is a nice arrangement you have; sounds like it works well.

The ATM issue never really arose here because there was nowhere to spend money; I have a cash stash but it was never touched. Would’ve come in handy in a longer-term issue, but this was a short-term dry run.
