1781: Durring the American Revolution, the Continental frigate Alliance, under command of Capt. John Barry, battles HMS Atalanta and HMS Trepassy off Nova Scotia. After several broadsides by Alliance, the British ships surrender.
One of the Delaware River crossings near Philadelphia is named after Commodore Barry. I read the Wikipedia entry and the Brits offered him 100 K pounds, an immense sum at the time, and command of any Royal Navy frigate he wanted to defect. The USS Alliance was one of the first major naval combatants built in the new United States.
Like John Paul Jones, Barry was native to the British Isles in his case Ireland.
