I spend a lot of time reading up on folklore, probably because I’m American Indian and we have a lot of it. It’s not just Hawaii, almost every culture has stories of “little people” who will lead you astray generally deep into perilous forests if you follow their voices. It seems like “don’t follow strange voices (or lights) into the woods” is pretty much a given. I’m generally a rational guy, but I had two close relatives who said they saw the little people, and I saw enough weird stuff on the reservation during by brief time living there that I don’t completely rule them out. That said, you don’t even have to believe in such things to take that warning as sound advice. . . even if the voices are coming from your own head, you’re probably crazy and shouldn’t trust them.
