New York City: Let’s repeal this gun control law. Gun owners: Hell, no!

The city of New York, which has rarely met a gun-control law it hasn’t loved, wants to repeal one. Gun owners in The Big Apple want to stop the repeal action and keep the law on the books, and are flooding the comment process in an effort to stop the city from changing the law.

What gives? In short, both sides are counting the chairs on the Supreme Court:

In January, the court agreed to hear a Second Amendment challenge to a New York City gun regulation. The city, fearing a loss that would endanger gun control laws across the nation, responded by moving to change the regulation. The idea was to make the case moot.

The move required seeking comments from the public, in writing and at the hearing. Gun rights advocates were not happy. …

The regulation allows residents with so-called premises licenses to take their guns to one of seven shooting ranges in the city. But it prohibits them from taking their guns to second homes and shooting ranges outside the city, even when the guns are unloaded and locked in containers separate from ammunition.

The city’s proposed changes, likely to take effect in a month or so, would remove those restrictions. Whether they would also end the case is another matter.

Which goes to show that NYC gets the tyranny it richly deserves. New Yorkers are not worthy of freedom or the protections of the Bill of Rights. They don’t deserve it.

The democrats overplayed their hand in Illinois and they got burned, badly. This would eviscerate big city gun laws and they know it. They don’t want this anywhere near the Supreme Court. It’s already been scheduled for the fall. They might even wake Ginsburg on this one.

The liberals will scream that “the streets will flow with blood” despite it not flowing any more in Illinois got double crossed by its own confiscatory policies.

This will be a wonderful opening act for President Trump’s re-election in 2020!!

Gun owners are objecting in hope of invalidating it and other regs.

And then when nobody’s looking, they’d quietly re-enact the law.

Unlikely to work out that way. Funny how judges can find umbras and penumbras to justify the most bizarre liberal interpretation to restrict second amendment rights, but can’t seem to understand the actual words as written

Problem is, as I and I’m sure you know, they don’t stay in New York.

NY gun laws are a bizarre layering of prohibitions and exceptions. Indeed, the law in question might sound ripe for overturning, but doing so might result in even more prohibition in practice.

Consider that NY gun law starts by defining & banning firearms - but a rifle is not a firearm. Licensed pistols are exempted firearms; the license may be revoked for any or no reason. From there, it gets weird.

New York City is trying to cynically moot this case, because it knows it would lose before the Supremes. What the City doesn’t realize is that a case is not moot if the terminated action is capable of repetition. Obviously, the challenged law would be reenacted if the case is dismissed. The Justices will not be fooled by the Marxist Mayor and his minions.

“MAD” Tim Sullivan’s law. He was hit by a train after escaping a mental institution.

Yup. Tammany Hall, and the criminal protection rackets.

Very true. They ruin every aspect of their lives by voting for Democrat politicians, and then, because they're New Yorkers and too stupid and too arrogant to admit that they brought the problems on themselves move to someplace like FL or GA or TX and start their same voting patterns all over again.

Nope - the gun rights folks are looking at the whole pie instead of a piece of the crust that the dems want to toss them ...
