I didnt see any mention of it in the article, but wasnt he playing on an injured lower leg that affected his movements and only in the game because they needed his batting? Yes. Buckner was dealing with lower leg issues which likely affected that play.

He had a severely injured Achilles tendon. He was obviously hobbled and in pain the whole series. He was red hot in September but went cold in the Series.

I recall reading about how many managers would have taken a player injured like that out of the game and John McNamara was faulted for that and other inconsistencies during that World Series.
