It’s funny how these things work out.

The moment the ball went through Buckner's legs, Mike Torres (who was broadcasting the game on radio) said, "I'm off the hook. I'm off the hook." As you may recall, Torres served up the homer to Bucky F'n Dent.

I used to work out with Buckner at the East Bank Club in downtown Chicago in the mid 80s. He was a powerful man and quite humble, which people often took for aloofness.

“As you may recall, Torres served up the homer to Bucky F’n Dent.”

And then (oddly enough) a few months later in May 1979, Stan Jonathan stayed on too long and caused the Boston Bruins to be called for too many men on the ice in the crucial last few minutes of the third period of game 7 against the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup semi finals. That allowed the Canadiens to tie the game with the famous Guy Lafleur goal and then beat the Bruins in overtime with Yvon Lambert scoring. Don Cherry’s days as the Bruins’ coach were effectively over at that time and the Bruins did not make the Cup Finals until 1988 against the Edmonton Oilers.

It should be noted that upon his return to Fenway a few years ago he received a standing ovation. Boston fans are a tough bunch, but we appreciate talent. We even accepted Shaq one year.
