On a serious note: I was shocked. I had heard it was crowded, but that is utter insanity. If no taxpayer dollars are expended to save them, it's their ass.

Seems folks in Jamaica are running scams where they call people in the States saying that they’ve won the Jamaican Lottery, just send money to cover the taxes...
On another article, I read the actual climbing season is right now, short (Mid May to end of month) and ends by next weekend.
The Nepal government only issued 318 permits to climb the mountain.
So while this looks like a lot, and it is, it doesn’t happen except a few weeks each year. It looks like half the permitees (and obviously certified Nepali guides) are all trying on the same day.
There may well be several days were the weather was too bad and no attempts at the summit were made then, which could further bottleneck the last ascension.
