100%... that map tells it all
Picture of her a rescue pretty suspicious. Looks like she smeared mud on herself. Hadnt lost wait. Didnt have blisters or torn up feet. As blue eyed as she is she should have been roasted by the Hawaiian sun
We may never know the real story. I call bs
And shows no weight loss
Laz, most of the coast in Hawaii is not navigable on foot. Mostly cliffs and rocks, uninhabited. Sand beaches are actually rare.
Roasted in the jungle?
Have you ever been in the Hawaiian jungle?
Its super dense.
Hey, I know... I watch Man vs Wild!
Bear has been in some pretty sticky situations but I’m sure his camera crew will help out if needed. I think the worst episode I ever saw was when he was down in some Panamanian Mangrove jungle... that would have been pure living hell.
The important question is would the Laz do her? ;-)
How do you lose your shoes
Walking through a stream.
Ditto that. Ive been to the interior of Maui and I have no trouble believing this womans story. It can be very rugged there with endless tiny pockets surrounded by steep ridges.
True. Some of the dumb comments on this thread must be from people who have never been outside a city park. One poster described undeveloped Maui as woods.
Some of the dumb comments
Like the ones describing her publicity photo as after the episode, when it was clearly taken before and used to help identify her.
Walking through a stream.
Another way it could happen is trying to scramble through heavy brush. Once the shoes are off you cant go back through the stickers to retrieve them if you can even see them. Thickets in jungle can be very dark.
I saw what you did there... {:-)
Yeah “the woods”! ROTFLMAO!
22 year resident here. I had a piece of property that backed up to a 1000’ drop into a gully. Was planning a double fence 10’ apart to keep the dogs safe. In fact my neighbor came to my house one day asking for my help looking for her dog. She threw the ball and the dog went after it and was never seen again. Went off a cliff probably. She spent about $3k in helo time looking for it. Sad.
Yes I have. But I still got burned and in way less than 16 days
I nearly did that twice on a hike in my city urban "woods" after rain and still had a runoff. So losing shoes isn't far-fetched.
How to get lost? Step off of trail 100 yards (as suggested) to go take a leak and get turned around. You go in the direction you think is the way back to the trail and end up in deep (poop.) It's not like where guys can turn to a tree to water it and have no problems.
Hell, even in my local suburban nature area that is 4 1/2 miles long and a mile wide. But get turned around in there off-trail (or wander an over-grown one that shows on Alltrails) and it's easy to get lost.
Looking at this particular trail and checking the topography means she was considerably off-trail.
And if you think it's rubbish, go read up on Mitzi Clemons and tell me how easy it is to walk back to the trail or know your way instantly, or how easy it is to not end up 4 miles away from where you were last seen.
20 miles in a Hawai'i forest with no path?
As someone who does this regularly, 20 miles on trails might be possible in a day without gear. But off-trail? Probably chronically dehydrated for days with no remaining water bottle?
She's the fortunate one. She could have been frog food at the bottom of a waterfall if she had taken a bad step or wrong stream.
Her feet look remarkably swollen
