Oh, thank goodness. It might have been Mathias Rust in a Cessna 172. That dude sure embarrassed the Russians. A bunch of them got fired over that. I was stationed at Travis at the time.

Rumor was the Russkies wound up turning on some additional radar that they didn’t want captured on SIGINT (NATO).
I don’t know if that was just an old wive’s tale or if that actually happened.
