I suspect that large bulge on the plane’s side is a phased array radar that is probably capable or tracking people and vehicles in motion. Most likely, it can also identify vehicles sitting still. Our version, the name of which escapes me now, of that is so good it is almost like looking at moving pictures. You can count the people and tell what type of vehicle it is. The prototype of our version was used in the Gulf War against Saddam Hussein’s retreating army and the entire road was covered with vehicles strafed by planes vectored in by a controller.

The Air Defense Zone (ADIZ) extends out roughly 200 NM from shore. A countries air space is internationally recognized, usually about 12 NM off shore. The numbers may not be the same as I remember, but the idea is we intercept in the ADIZ before any unauthorized flight has a chance to get into out national airspace. Its still international airspace and neither side has a right to shoot, but its where the message is clear. We are watching you. Don’t cross that line.

“entered Alaska’s airspace,” or “remained in international airspace,” WHICH?

Sounds like we’re playing cat and mouse again. Wonder why that F-16 that played lawn dart in California was hot when it went in?

Maybe this ?

The Tu-95RT maritime reconnaissance variant was produced to specially perform this duty: it had surface-search radar in a belly pod and even added a glass observation blister just behind the tail gun position.

Our version was various versions of the KC-135 back then.

We had a KC-135 Burning Wind back-ender - he’s gone now - RIP - signals collection

The KC-135 Cobra Ball, of course, collected images and film (of some sort or another)

Then there was the E-8 J-STARS aircraft.

There may be other, newer variants of such. Dunno
