Bought my grand nephew a Raspberry Pi for his 11th birthday.

Total Cost:
Computer kit from Amazon -- $55.
Wireless keyboard/mouse combo from Amazon -- $20.
Used flat screen monitor from Goodwill -- $10.

The good part is that he got to assemble it himself - more fun than legos.

I assume that mass storage is supplied by external USB or microSD devices, and one of those contains the linux distro?

And how much internal memory do you get with your $55? I assume there has to be a boot loader built-in to the mother board, that contains at least the lowest levels of H/W drivers in order to let the CPU access the USB devices. Are there slots for RAM expansion? Or do you just go with much slower "emulated RAM" sitting on a USB drive?
