The reason Democrats lost the South is that conservatives stopped voting with the racist Democrats.
You can clearly see this in the vote totals for Perot in 1992 and 1996 [not as pronounced in 1996, because the conservatives caught on to the Dem divide & conquer game].
The racist Democrats still live in the South - they're just a complete minority now, and dying off as they age.
