A man who farms near Pender, Nebraska, went to extraordinary lengths to save his life after his left leg became trapped in a machine on his farm.
In the early afternoon of April 19, Kurt Kaser, a lifelong corn, soybean and hog farmer, was transferring grain from one bin to another when he stepped into a grain auger. The machine ate away at his left leg and sucked the 63-year-old toward the machine.
I didnt know what to do, he said Tuesday. I was afraid it was going to suck me in more. I about gave up and let it do what it was going to do.
Kaser was alone on the farm that day. His cellphone either fell into the machine or fell out someplace else. On the 1,500-acre farm, yelling would do no good.
So he pulled out his 3-inch pocket knife and hacked away at his leg.
I have had other incidences. I try to hold my cool or figure out how to make the situation better at the time, he said. Its hard to describe. You want to survive and you do what you need to do to survive, I guess.
Kaser saw the machine remove his foot from his body and tear away at his flesh. About 8 inches below his knee, he found the smallest connection of tissue and determined it was his best chance to free himself.

Damn.
Hey Rebel. What kind of women do you like?
I figure the shock is what let him do it.
That and it was already mangled good.
Stay clear.
Hes at least as tough as nails. He deserves a honors for saying Not today and doing what takes to stay in the game.
Sorry, what is PTO in this context? Thanks.
Unngh!
Did you see his left arm?
Does not respect hazzards.
Nebraska farmers made of grit
Breathing.
What powers his grain anger.
The drive mechanism that transfers torque from the tractor to the farming implement behind it.
PTO .. power take off, it is a shaft at the back of s tractor that can be used to provide power to farm implements.
I was reading the other day about a similar situation. Farmer gets his arm caught in the machine and was being pulled into it. Then the machine burst into flames, he caught fire while being sucked into the machine.
So, he pulled out his buck knife and cut his arm to free himself. Then extinguished the fire on his body. Walked two miles to the county road an flagged down a car.
Driver of the car was an off duty paramedic.
I think that God didn’t want the guy to die that day.

I met a farmer years ago who cut off an arm stuck in a corn picker. He said his father always told him to carry a pocket knife in each pocket just in case.
Portable augurs driven by an electric motors are often used to move grain, but the point is the same - body parts will not stop them.
