A great shortstop and certainly an all-star. Also a decent guy who spent three of what would have probably been peak years in his career serving in World War II.

However, he was voted a Hall of Famer only because he played for the NY Yankees during their winning years. These are statistically the most similar players:

1.Elvis Andrus (927.5)
2.Art Fletcher (918.9)
3.Billy Rogell (915.8)
4.Billy Jurges (910.0)
5.Claude Ritchey (908.6)
6.Lonny Frey (906.7)
7.Marty Marion (905.9)
8.Doggie Miller (905.6)
9.Lyn Lary (904.6)
10.Jose Offerman (904.4)

NONE of them are in the Hall of Fame. I've heard of only four of the ten on that list for the same reason that I've heard of Phil Rizzuto-- they all played in at least one World Series.

All true except he was voted in by the veterans committee spearheaded by Mantle, Berra and voted for by such greats as Ted Williams.

He wouldn’t be the first HOFamer who got in through veterans committee.

You know the sportswriters who vote tend to be bigoted toward their favorites too.

This year Mariano Rivera was elected by 100% of the voting writers. That has never happened before, 100%. He certainly deserves it.

BTW. Scooters induction speech is a pisser. He didn’t know when to stop and kept motor mouthing on and on. Finally Yogi got up and walked him off the stage. Pretty funny.
