I’ve run across some real cases who were ensign’s. If it wasn’t for the nobody gets left behind, or the team work ethic instilled on Academy classes there are a lot of would-be officers that would have washed out long before graduation.

There was also this propensity in the military that that has always been something I completely disagree with, and that is Academy grads are often not extended beyond their initial 5-year obligated service, but they are invited to join the reserves. Which means incompetence is rewarded.
