My husband’s military friends are people he got to know over the course of his years in the Marines.

And who says it was a ship? US submarines of the time had AA missiles, smaller Navy boats/ships could be similarly armed, and the parts that the government was looking for at the time were consistent with a Stinger and not a Russian system.

A Bayliner could have launched a Stinger.

My thoughts too. Military men are genuine experts when it comes to scuttlebutt. No offense meant, merely an observation.
