FULL TITLE: Hollywood mourns one of its greatest stars as wholesome screen icon Doris Day dies of pneumonia aged 97

Hollywood legend Doris Day has died at the age of 97.

Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday.

The foundation said in a statement that she was surrounded by close friends and 'had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia.'

She died at her estate home in Carmel Valley, California, where she has lived in solitude for the last several decades with her dozens of pets.

The charity also revealed that 'her wishes were that she have no funeral or memorial service and no grave marker.' Instead, she wanted fans to donate to the charity she founded to save animals.

Day charmed America in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, starring in an astonishing 39 films in just 20 years. On screen, she was a bright-eyed goody two-shoes and she often referred to herself as 'America's virgin'.

Her personal life, however, was marred by darker episodes.

All four of her marriages collapsed; her first husband beat her, the second left her, the third squandered her fortune and her fourth felt overlooked by her for her dogs.

She also suffered a bout of mental illness in 1950s at the height of her career.

But her greatest loss was the death of her only child, Terry, in 2004. He died aged 64 after battling melanoma.

In recent years, Day was seldom seen publicly.

Composer Oscar Levant said back in the 50s - “I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin. “

I am sad today about the death of Doris Day, one of my all time favorite actor/singers. She was so wholesome and her movies are all good. I just watched Calamity Jane for the first time a few weeks ago. She was the personification of grace and class. When I was a child, I had an album of hers and I would play it on my little portable record player over and over. This song was on it and I would sing along. It's from the 1958 movie Teacher's Pet, a romantic comedy with Day, Clark Gable and Gig Young which has become a favorite of mine. I hope you enjoy the song.

Her death has overshadowed Lena Horne’s, more proof of white privelege. /sarc

“It sounds like she lived a rather lonely life in her later years. Sad for such a lovely and vivacious lady.”

Those who live into their 90s outlive their friends and often their children as well.

Listen to "Secret Love" if you really want to hear a great singer. No auto-tune needed!

There was speculation that Terry Melcher, Doris Day’s son was the original Target for the Manson Murders At The Tate residence where Melcher was had lived just prior to Tate moving in.

Apparently Melcher thought about recording Manson but decided against it and Madison felt highly disrespected enough to target Melcher, but Melchet wasn’t there and the people who had moved into the residence were murdered instead by the Manson cult killers.

There was and will only be one of her. She was the absolute best and her movies with James Garner and Rock Hudson were full of laughs - a person with many talents - all sensational.

AND could she wear clothes - the greatest figure and most beautiful wardrobe in any movie made... Did we watch her for her acting - or her singing - or her clothes? I loved everything about her.

Someone wrote that she sounded lonely - I’m sure she would have taken exception to that as she apparently derived much happiness from her charities and love for animals.

Doris Day looked like THIS on her 97th birthday just a month or so ago. Incredible.
