MASON, Ohio — Mason High School students will no longer vie for valedictorian and salutatorian distinctions in an effort to "reduce the overall competitive culture" between students, school officials said.
Beginning with the Class of 2020, the high school will do away with both honors. School officials said it follows a yearlong study and focus group with students, staffers and families.
"It's about what it means to be happy and what it means to be successful and it's not just about the grade but it's about the whole child," Associate Principal Shanna Bumiller said.
Mason school officials made the announcement Thursday as part of an effort to improve students' mental wellness.
"I think in the long run it'll really going to change the atmosphere in the school in a positive way," Mason High School sophomore Ryan Griffith said.

Why stop at doing away with “grades”?
If we choose to ignore the difference between “learning” and “non-learning”, why are “teachers” needed at all?
Indeed, why not replace all of Mason’s current cadre of “teachers” with “baby-sitters”.
Since “baby-sitters” earn a lot less money than “teachers”, the taxpayers of Mason could save a lot of money by making that logical switch.
The “students” will probably enjoy 4 years (or more) of a totally “stress-free” environment.
The now steadily-employed “baby-sitters” will be happy.
And the laid-off “teachers” can take pride in being sacrificed for PROGESS!
My dad worked for the government for 28 years. He told me before I got my first full time job, “Never work for the government.” Well, I didn’t, but I worked for a company that contracted me out to the government and I ended up doing most of the government employees’ work in addition to my own. :-\
I ‘learned’ my lesson when stationed at NAVCOMMSTA Washington DC - near Andrews AFB -... in Cheltenham MD.
I lived in Arlington VA at the time and since the Navy provided lodging on base and had a dispensary/clinic/meals etc they figured there was NO EXCUSE for not being to work on time, NO MATTER THE CONDITIONS.
It started snowing and when the snow set in, I set out for work having to put chains on to get out of the neighborhood and taking them off when I got to the main road...this was pre Capital Beltway and had to go down Suitland Parkway then Route 5 then Dangerfield Rd where I had to put my chains back on.
I and all others (USN) for the watch were there but the civilians were conspicuously missing - of course the ones on the shift before were able to leave on time and their reliefs were ‘snowed in’.
I had passed the homes of a few of them and offered to go back and pick them up.
I was not so politely told to mind my own f’n business so as Watch PO it was up to me to see that the civilians work was covered. We were allowed to hold over the watch we relieved but - then again - we were supposedly too ‘stupid’ to do the jobs the civilians had.
Whatever happened to vocational education?
We had brick laying, auto mechanics, metal shop, wood shop, drafting, secretarial, home making, cooking. ..
You did your basic 3Rs in the mornings then 4hrs voc.classes in the afternoon. When you graduated, you had a marketable skill. 90%+ were recruited for jobs prior to graduation.
College is not for everyone. We need people that have the skills to work with their hands.

I gradiated in the top 98% of my class. Yes. My mom has a bumper sticker. My child is an honors student at Mason High.
Idiot students are in for a rude surprise when they hit the real.....competitive........world.
If this goes on, pretty soon all that will be left is urinating on trouser legs.
I was in a job where we had to “partner” with the Department of Energy on some energy R&D projects. Before that, I spent five years starting up new industrial and utility boilers in a wide variety of projects. Boilers are gigantic boxes made up of bent steel tubes that carry the water that is getting boiled into steam.
The DOE project manager I was working with open an access hatch on our project boiler and asked me (I kid you not!) “What are all those tubes in there?”
My already-low opinion of the DOE dropped quite a few notches further that day.
It’s coming back..in our school district a local (Wealthy) Realtor helped start a program..it’s the fastest growing ...includes carpentry, nursing, auto shop and more
Nope! Simply do away with the government indoctrination asylums or send the parents to jail for criminal abuse of their offspring by committing them to these asylums...
In their dream result, government will control the means of production and there won’t be any.

Voc.Ed. will cure the snowflake syndrome and make boys Men, and Girls Women. Who knows, it might even help to restore sanity in the country.
Sad, indeed! I graduated from Mason High School (then known as William Mason High School) in 1975. I remember we were the largest class at that time....186 graduates...and yes...we had the Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and the Class President give speeches that day. This breaks my heart!

Why, yes, a uniform homogeneous society of stupid people is what we must achieve. </ sarcasm>
They need to do away with the National Honor Society, discourage students from seeking scholarships, and basically, just do away with grades altogether.

Give every incoming Freshman a Diploma and a 4.0 upon enrolling.
Day 2 is Graduation.
I believe I have just solved a LOT of problems.
I graduated from that high school in 1980 ( actually my sister was salutatorian a few years later ). All I can say is - it figures.
I just went to a college graduation last Friday where they had summa, magma and cum laude. How un PC. I hope the other 500 or so grads weren’t traumatized for life.
