Layne Chesney, the teenager who was badly burned in a New Year's Eve bonfire, has died. She was 15.

Chesney was burned over the majority of her body. She had been recovering in a hospital since the incident on Dec. 31, 2017.

According to a post on her mother's Facebook page, Layne died today.

"Layne was called home today by our creator. She fought a hard battle right until the end- never wanting to quit- because quitting was not in her nature..." says the post, which was published just before 12:30 p.m.

"We are heart broken, but remain always grateful that she was a part of our lives and world- we just wish it had been for a lot longer with us here on Earth.

"We ask that you give the family time to grieve. Leigh Ann has asked that contacts not be made as they all need time to grieve, process, and move through this terrible loss.

"Thank you all for your love, prayers and support that you have shown for Layne and our family. We are broken."

In December, close to the anniversary of the fire, her mother Leigh Ann Chesney said that Layne was fighting through good and bad days .

Layne was burned after she tried to put gasoline on a fire-pit at a friend's house, and the can exploded, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said. Three other people were injured.

The Fort Pierce teen attended Lincoln Park Academy and was a star softball player with the Jensen Beach Wildcats.

I had been following this story since in happened almost a year and a half ago. She wasn't supposed to make it through the night. She fought hard for her life but her injuries were just too severe. May she rest in peace and may her loving friends and family find healing.

One lesson parents need to teach. Don't throw gasoline on a fire site. Bad things happen.

I was wondering how such a tragedy could have happened, and your link had the answer. Someone poured gasoline on a fire.

I personally do that once in a while to get oil to light deadfall trees in a burn pit. It is very dangerous. If there is an existing flame or embers there will be a huge flare up that expands for both width and height. Being as close as 15 feet will singe hair. However I use a safer method than pouring.

Poor thing. I would have thought that if she made it for 1 1/2 years, she was long out of the woods. So sad.

In hospital burn units it's often said of the *very* badly burned “the lucky ones die quickly”. This poor kid wasn't at *all* lucky.

May God welcome her into His loving arms.

I’m done here tonight, the screen is getting blurry.

My thoughts exactly. I wasn’t sure how to say it w/o seeming heartless. You were able to do it.

There but for the grace of God go I...

When I was about her age, my friends and I did stupid things; fire and gasoline, fire and starting fluid, whatnot. Experienced the awesome power of fuel without paying the ultimate price doing so. Some kids are lucky. In her case, it sounded like not recklessness but simple absentmindedness. The fire was going out so without thinking, she reached for the can of gasoline to start it back up.

Her actions also injured and burned three other people, forever scarred.

I wonder if she wound up with a staph infection at the hospital being there so long.

I'd been following the Facebook posts from her family. She'd been battling infections after the next, skin graphs not taking, blood pressure issues, kidney issues, and on. Her whole body was traumatized.

It’s safer (for me, anyway) to use diesel. I almost messed up badly using gasoline burning off a huge pile of brush I’d cleared. I found out the hard way what gasoline vapor is capable of if you make a boo boo. Scared the heck out of me.

[[I personally do that once in a while to get oil to light deadfall trees in a burn pit.]]

Put kerosene or charcoal lighter fluid on the brush and let it sit for a few hours. Then light it with newspaper tucked into the branches. Will touch off much slower and burn longer to get the branches going.

NEVER use gasoline under any circumstances. Its too volatile and burns much too quickly. I knew a kid that had the same thing happen but he survived. He had about a dozen operations on his face, neck and scalp to deal with the burns. The flame will travel right up the stream of a gas can and explode the can which is what happened to him.
