More than 100 New York City moms living below the poverty level will be given $12,000 with no strings attached as part of a new study measuring the effect of poverty on early-childhood development.
The study, named Baby’s First Years and partially funded by the city, is currently recruiting moms from maternity wards who will be handed up to $333 a month on pre-paid debit cards for the first three years of their baby’s life to see if having cash can affect the baby’s cognitive skills.

The study is flawed from the start for the following reasons:
1. They are choosing mothers who are high poverty and who just gave birth to yet ANOTHER financial burden, a baby. So these are women who are incapable of making rational choices in the first place--you don't have another baby if you are impoverished.
2. "Previous research suggests a connection between poverty and brain function, with tots from wealthier families tending to have better language and memory skills..." Well, duh. Wealthier families probably have jobs which allow them to have books, computers, tutors, and other materials resulting in superior brain stimulation vs. plunking a kid down in front of a TV while you do drugs, engage in more illicit sex, etc. The latter are characteristic of lower income mothers, so it's no surprise their kids turn out lagging behind academically.
3. No amount of money will "jump-start" someone out of poverty if they have not been exposed to a productive lifestyle, starting at home. They will instead just spend the money on cigarettes, drugs, fast food/junkfood, and expensive cloting or electronic items.
The entire purpose of this bogus research is to attempt to justify yet MORE social services and waste MORE taxpayer money in wealth redistribution. Freakin' libtards.
For most of these mothers, this baby is yet another “welfare baby”...So on top of raising their welfare bennies they are gonna get and additional $12,000???

“there is clear evidence that basic minimum income has outsized effects on children’s increased cognitive ability, due to multivariate factors”

How much do the "Principal Investigators" get out this per year?
Will the “Study” require reporting and analysis of how every penny of the $333 per month is spent (and any other funds the mamas have, since they could easily spend the grant on reasonable stuff, but waste the funds they would have used on baby products, etc.). I assume the recipients also get free rent, EBT, WIC, Medicaid, etc., since $333/m isn’t going to do much on those tickets.
On your item 2: Studies for years have shown that young childrens’ physical brain development is stimulated by calm, positive environments and lots of verbal communication (of the grammatical kind). Past about 2 years old, if that growth hasn’t happened, it’s not going to. Insecure environments with violence, sexual abuse, screaming, witnessing sex and abuse, moving constantly, being handed around or neglected, etc., wreck the development of empathy, resilience, coping with adversity, ability to behave, focus and problem-solve, etc. Notice how money has no direct bearing on those things — they are caused by bad conduct, bad parenting skills, and generational dysfunction.
