If I stole $150k, would I be running around loose?

I don’t know. Embezzlers often get off with no jail time. I personally know of a couple of cases. One, a woman worked for a company for over 20 years, stealing just a little at a time so that it wasn’t really noticed. By the time they caught her she had gotten away with close to $300,000. To avoid bad publicity, her company let her pay it back and not do jail time.

Another more egregious case involved a guy working for the local university. He got away with around $200,000. Turns out, he had done the same thing at his previous job—another university. Agreed to pay it back and he went on his merry way. His next job was at a charity in Florida where he did the same thing. Don’t know if he avoided jail time for that.

Crime sort of paid for those two for a while.
