The grief on the face of Mooresville Mayor Miles Atkins reflected the emotions of an entire community as it began dealing with the loss of a police officer.
Jordan Harris Sheldon, 32, died at Carolinas Medical Center, shortly after being shot after making a traffic stop in Mooresville late Saturday night.
Atkins joined Mooresville Police Chief Damon Williams in a briefing late Sunday morning to talk about Sheldon, a six-year veteran of the Mooresville Police Department. Sheldon, a canine officer, was shot and killed late Saturday night on West Plaza Drive.
Atkins wiped away tears as he talked about Sheldons death.
Mooresville, of all places, how can this happen, Atkins said.
Atkins said he could think of only one word to describe his feelings. Devastated, he said. Thats the only word I can really think of to describe how some of us are feeling in the community.
MPD Chief Damon Williams also expressed grief at Sheldons death. Were sad. Were hurt, he said. Williams identified the man who they said shot and killed Sheldon.Michael Yovany Aldana, 28, of Mooresville, was found dead inside an apartment near the shooting scene. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Williams said.
Sheldon, who was accompanied by his canine partner, Ramon, stopped a vehicle shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, Williams said. He was shot and the suspect fled the scene, Williams said. A mahunt, involving several different agencies, ensued. It was discovered he was possibly in a nearby apartment and the MPD Special Response Team went into the apartment, Williams said. Aldana was found dead, he said.
The dog was not injured and he was retrieved by another officer, Williams said.
He said all the MPD officers wear body cameras, and looking at the footage from Sheldons camera as well as from that of responding officers will be part of the investigation. The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation, as is standard with all officer-involved shootings, Williams said.
Williams said Aldana was known to police. What prompted the shooting is unknown, Williams said.
For now, he said, the department and community are struggling to understand Sheldons loss.
Getting a call like I got last night is one of those you fear as a police chief, he said. Last night we lost one of our brothers in arms Its going to be a difficult week for us You cant prepare for what were experiencing emotionally.
He said the community is in mourning but the MPD has received an overwhelming amount of support from across the state. Ive talked to about half the chiefs in North Carolina, he said. Williams also thanked agencies for stepping in and helping with calls in the aftermath of the shooting. He said the Iredell Sheriffs Office and North Carolina Highway Patrol both stepped in to handle calls, and he received offers of assistance from several nearby police departments, including Statesville. Iredell Sheriff Darren Campbell said deputies answered calls for Mooresville from shortly after the shooting until around 6 a.m. Campbell said it was a difficult duty but he and Williams wanted to make sure the community was safe and the suspect was apprehended.
Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to them, Campbell said Sunday afternoon. Atkins said the community is coming together to support the MPD and to mourn Sheldon. Were a strong community, he said.
A man who understands what the community is dealing with drove up from Marion, South Carolina, to offer support. The Rev. Raymond Johnson said hes accompanied his wife to Mooresville on business and was always treated warmly. This hit me so hard, he said. He said he knows how the community is feeling. His community experienced the loss of two officers. It hurts, Johnson said.
Funeral arrangements for Officer Jordan Harris Sheldon have been set. The service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Calvary Church in Charlotte, located at 5801 Pineville-Matthews Road, according to the Town of Mooresville. A procession of public safety vehicles will leave from the funeral home in Concord to the church in Charlotte for the service. Following the service, a procession will travel to the Mooresville Police Department.
While Im aware the show needs to focus on action rather than the routine and mundane, Im still astonished at the utter lack of respect and hostility directed at LE, even while theyre bending over backwards in front of the cameras to be courteous to the suspects.
If it werent so troublesome, it would be amusing the number of times a suspect, surrounded by armed deputies and even K9s behave as if theyre the ones in charge.
I know all cops arent perfect, but with what Ive seen on that TV show alone Im sure I wouldnt last a week on the job without over-using my taser or worse.
MOORESVILLE, N.C. - Hundreds from the community came out Wednesday evening to honor fallen Mooresville police Officer Jordan Sheldon on Wednesday evening. This is a celebration, Sheldons father, Harry Sheldon, said. This is a victory. The K-9 officer was shot and killed last Saturday night during a traffic stop. The town of Mooresville hosted a vigil Wednesday night outside the town hall, with officers, the community and town officials. The community is going through grief but on the path of restoration. “We grieve for the loss of such a young and good man that served our community, the chaplain said Wednesday night.
Harry Sheldon said his son first pursued a career in engineering but always had the passion to protect and serve in law enforcement. Jordan Sheldon changed his major at UNC Charlotte after two years. Jordan, with his beautiful blue eyes, leaned in across the table on his elbows and said, Dad, I dont want to be an engineer, Harry Sheldon told the crowd. He didnt support his sons decision in the beginning. I tried to get him to go to the FBI, the father said. He said, No. Drug enforcement? He said, No. Jordan Sheldon wanted to serve the town that he loved and called home Mooresville.
“I’ve been in front of the police station three times a day, just watching all the tributes grow and grow,” Mooresville resident Joy Mauny said.
Harry Sheldon also talked about the night his son died and thanked witnesses who stopped to help him. “They Pulled over and put their hands on Jordans body, Harry Sheldon said. The lady put her hands on his wound and prayed and held his hand in his dying moments. Thank you, Mooresville.” While the loss of his son still pains him, he said his heart has been aching for the shooter’s family too. The shooter died, and that night in the hospital, maybe his mother, his mother heard that her son took his own life, Harry Sheldon said. I cried again, thinking about his mother in another room who was weeping with your chaplains. So, its a sad, sad situation for everybody.
“My God, everybody is here, said Tiffany Tratnyek, who paid her respects Wednesday prior to the vigil. I’m looking at this, and my heart is breaking.
Young community members honor fallen Mooresville officer.
We witnessed a touching scene on Tuesday outside the Mooresville Police Department where a group of Boy Scouts traveled from out of town to the memorial site to honor Sheldon.
Some of the scouts said the officer often showed up at their school, bringing his K-9, Ramon, to show off tricks. Once even showing up with a SWAT team for a demonstration. “He was just amazing, Scout Christopher Zimmerman said. His dog was very enthusiastic. He taught us about drugs and how the dogs could find it within seconds.” The scouts lined the streets in honor of Sheldon.
Next week is National Police Week and Iredell County is dedicating it to Sheldon.
Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell spoke about how, even after Sheldon’s death, he’s seen a lot of good. Strong relationships are forming, he said. Strengthening is happening between us and the community. Our friendships are forged a little tighter as we turn in comfort and support.
Police escorted Sheldon’s body from Charlotte to Concord on Tuesday — an enormous tribute.

The Procession is/was 15 miles long. There are still vehicles going by the end of Our street as they enter the Downtown area headed to the MVPD HQ. He and Jamie (Fiance) had just bought property and started to build a houuse. They had a Child- I don't know any details on that. Ramon His K-9 Partner will be retired and I believe go to Jamie and Child. They already have Loki- Officer Sheldons 1st K-9 Partner and 2 other Rescue Dogs.
As the Procession went through Mooresville His Father had the window rolled down and was Thanking and waving at Everybody lining the streets All the way through Town.
Is there any info on the worthless POS who took this man’s life?
Just breaks my heart.
The SCUMBAG ran to his Apartment a couple blocks away and shot himself in front of his own Son. MVPD found him dead on the floor. scumbag daddy had custody of son because mommy is a junkie. I guess the Judge flipped a coin to choose between the two.
MVPD “knew” of SCUMBAG from prior contacts. In the last 3 months the scumbag had 1 DWI in Statesville (just about 20 miles North of Here in Mooresville) and ANOTHER DWI somewhere else but have not heard where.
We found out yesterday the posscumbag shot Officer Sheldon twice in the face... I’m not sorry that posscumbag is dead but I would have preferred that Ramon had RIPPED OUT THE posscumbag THROAT so he could see Ramon while dieing slowly...
The NASCAR Teams are All running Decals this Weekend and Team Penski will be doing a Tribute on Pit Road before the Green Flag. I’ll be Posting some Pics here in a few minutes on that stuff. I’m surprised that more Teams aren’t doing something since most are based here in Town.
Yep !!! It’s hit Town pretty hard emotionally
We went Downtown to the Public Memorial last evening. The Sound System SUCKED !!! We had to get audio from a TV Online Broadcast just to hear it but there was about a 15 second delay.
Thank you, Ma for the update and God bless.

Dunno how ta figger it out but we're gonna hasta start "takin' out tha trash" here before long.
This crap of burying good peeps for no good reason is gettin old. d:^|
Thank You. Yeah, if we could just have like different color marker flags to let us know the “level” of trashyness to prioritize things. I do have some Ammo that could be rotated out of stock due to dust level on the box, may as well put it to good use.
Thank Y’All.
I would like thank the citizens Mooresville and Iredell County for the overwhelming outpouring of love the police department has received over the last week. The loss of our brother, has affected every member of the Mooresville Police Department. However, the love and support from this community has made this week a little easier to endure. Earlier this week, I challenged the entire community to do it right on behalf of Officer Sheldon. This community has far exceeded that challenge and for that I thank you all.
Chief Damon Williams
