Make no mistakes...the cities will burn from within and from without.
The power plants, food, and water are not in the cities. The “country bumpkins” are not going to tolerate invasions of ferals stealing their crops. They will be shot on sight from long range, not in close quarters. It will be a war of snipers and guerilla insurrection, not hand to hand combat with commanded armies and organized fronts

This isn’t Africa, this is the United States.
Oil comes out of the ground in many places, and there is no shortage at all of people who can refine it. And today, the whole continent (not just the United States) is awash with small CNC fabrication shops even just for hobbyists.
It may come down to small arms as time goes by, but only the most incompetent and least experienced factions will start out that way. Certainly the survivors will not.
