I want to invite all Christians to join me in this pursuit of greater purity of heart and mind. In our day, when entertainment media is virtually the lingua franca of the world, this is an invitation to be an alien.
I believe with all my heart that what the world needs is radically bold, sacrificially loving, God-besotted freaks aliens. In other words, I am inviting you to say no to the world for the sake of the world.
The world does not need more cool, hip, culturally savvy, irrelevant copies of itself.
That is a hoax that thousands of young Christians have been duped by. They have got to be hip, cool, savvy, culturally aware, watching everything in order not to be freakish. And that is undoing them morally and, I think, diminishing their witness.
Sexual relations is a beautiful thing. God created it and pronounced it good. But it is not a spectator sport.

I remember “waking up” to the idea that all my old doper albums were not evil. Some guy in here quoted Savoy Brown’s Hellbound Train (which I just downloaded.... SB was a fantastic blues band in the day). I remember the freedom I felt when I realized that art is just man expressing his “mannishness”(that will be a clue for some of you), including passion, desires, longings, celebrations, despair, frustrations, hatreds, loves, etc. It is a kind of verbal, visual and musical mosaic of what it means to be made in the image of God. Therefore, ALL art is “good” in some sense. “The spiritual man appraises all things.” (apostle Paul to the Corinthians, and Corinth was a cesspool of sensuality)
However, IF you are a Xn (and what idiocy prompts self acknowledged pagans to think they have the slightest clue about what is being discussed here? You are dolts, and frankly should shut up and sit in the corner and listen. This is a family conversation and to be blunt, you ain’t family and have no clue what you are vomiting out in your ignorance)... IF you are a Xn, you also know that the image of God that creates wit, beauty, goodness, cleverness and all that is good in art is produced by terribly twisted men and women. Sometimes, the very twistedness is what is celebrated. In fact, the very first “poem” by fallen man in the book of Genesis sounds like some hip hop artist “Listen all you women....some punk disrespected me and I popped a cap in his @$$... killed the nigga, I did. Same thing gonna happen to you if you f**k wit me!”... bring the lyrics of Gen 4.23 forward a few thousand years and you get the same arrogant impudent swaggering celebration of hate and violence. That is what fallen man does in his art. Instead of celebrating his glory, he celebrates his shame.
THERE IS NO ART, CHRISTIAN OR OTHERWISE, which does not express this twistedness. It is up to the person with the Spirit of God and a bible to say “this is true, this is not, this is a clever way of saying what is true, this is a lie, and this is a tasteless pile of howling out ‘I am dead and I love death.’ “
We should honor what is good, what is true, and what is clever in art, including technically proficient ways of expressing lostness. The fundies are WRONG there. They imagine that you can draw some artificial line and have “pure” art. Ain’t no such animal. You just look silly.
There comes a line, though, whether it is wise to say “there is nothing good here that can possibly outweigh the appeal to bad” It is why I can’t listen to heavy doses of black metal, I don’t watch porn, and I have to ask myself “does this really help me understand how my culture thinks, or is this just appealing to my base nature that Christ died to redeem?” It is easy to kid myself.
That is what Piper is advocating. I think he is dead on correct.
Or better...play it at club gitmo for the guests.
I generally agree with most of your posts, bagster......fwiw
We can agree to disagree, OK
I sounded insulting, and I apologize
I know this is a tender subject for certain people. I have strong feelings as well, best not to discuss it amongst friends, I reckon.
Do love me some GoT, though.
Wow.
you should just practice what you preach.
I don’t watch GOT, but i don’t care if someone else does.
... unless, maybe you think that someone who is an actor should lecture you on politics.
I am just saying that people who are mostly ignorant about the subject matter they pontificate on should be quiet and learn something.
Not that they do... but they should.
“Game of Thrones” took an existing historical novel and added in fantasy elements.
All of the sexual hijinks and violence are in “Game Of Thrones” because the fourteenth century French monarchy was that way, and “Game of Thrones” is based upon Maurice Druon’s “Les Rois Maudits.”
The very point of being a "Christian" is to be Christ-like. Jesus didn't spend his life in the Temple debating scripture with the Pharisees. Generally speaking, he "hung out" with some of less desirable elements of society at the time. As a result, many were changed by his message of love and acceptance, while holding himself to a different standard than his surroundings.
So when I ask myself "What would Jesus do?", I come away with the answer -- Jesus would probably be in a room of people watching Game of Thrones, but have no desire to watch it, and if he was asked why he wasn't interested, he would politely explain, and convert one or two of the viewers.
i have a churchy neighbor who watches this with a 10 yr old and a 12 yr old. Is the sexuality toned down enough for that? I’m just curious. The family acts very pious but then let their kids watch this.
I haven’t watched much of it (I found it boring, personally), but have seen enough to know a 10 yr old and a 12 yr old shouldn’t be watching it.
I know lots of Pastors and churches all over the country that still very much teaching
“smoking cigarettes and mini skirts and booze and even dancing and God forbid Rock and Roll”.
I can give you addresses and names if you want.
Hilarious that in an era when drag queens are giving lectures to kids in public libraries, neoMarxist drivel has taken over the university and poisoned young people’s minds, and some FReepers still think that it’s Puritan New England.
“Conservative” my foot.
And no Christians shouldnt watch.
Butter sticks were in vogue for a while after.
ok, thanks!
Answer: Yes, if they want to. Mind your own business.
Ahhh, I totally misunderstood you. I didn't know we had moved into actors talking about politics. I thought you were talking about people who disagreed with the majority opinion of this thread, which seems to be that Christians shouldn't watch Game of Thrones and similar so-called "art".
My apologies for thinking what I was thinking.
I am just saying that people who are mostly ignorant about the subject matter they pontificate on should be quiet and learn something.
I do agree with you there, though they have the right to their opinion as do we all. But yes, they are mostly ignorant and pandering. I like actors, singers, athletes very often, but they make the mistake in thinking they are anything more than my dancing monkeys.
Give people enough money, and they always think they're important and better than other people. What's up with that?
The trick is, with self-important "performers" is to appreciate their performance and not the person. Nine times out of ten they're A-holes.
That's because we live in a nation of "choose your own Christianity", the perverted legacy of Martin Luther. Once you venture out of American Evangelicalism and experience Christendom over a broader cultural and historical sweep you find a much more sensible approach: cigarettes and booze ok in moderation, dancing ok as long as it is chastely done. Mini skirts though......bad idea in any age.
Watching TV is crap. ALL of it. Even "quality Christian programming." Get a hobby. Read a book. Plant a garden. Quit kidding yourself that you are not worshipping the household gods because you are watching "quality Christian programming."
That said, I am watching GOT to the bitter end...as soon as someone I know buys the DVD (as I have no TV and don't stream). I just need a sense of completion :)
