I want to invite all Christians to join me in this pursuit of greater purity of heart and mind. In our day, when entertainment media is virtually the lingua franca of the world, this is an invitation to be an alien.
I believe with all my heart that what the world needs is radically bold, sacrificially loving, God-besotted freaks aliens. In other words, I am inviting you to say no to the world for the sake of the world.
The world does not need more cool, hip, culturally savvy, irrelevant copies of itself.
That is a hoax that thousands of young Christians have been duped by. They have got to be hip, cool, savvy, culturally aware, watching everything in order not to be freakish. And that is undoing them morally and, I think, diminishing their witness.
Sexual relations is a beautiful thing. God created it and pronounced it good. But it is not a spectator sport.

Watching Game of Thrones is like your wife when youre young and her ovaries might be tickling her and she tells you to bring home a sexy movie which could mean anything from 9 and 1/2 Weeks or Eyes Wide Shut up to Soft made for girls porn or even Rocco Siffredi wild in Budapest which all depends on the lady
Girls have needs and fancies too.
Game of Thrones is fairly time
R rated with a little Caligula at times
Its way more than that
You are evil
Im listening to Hellbound Train in our honor
I kid you not.....
I might listen to Tell Mama next....another Savoy Brown goodie
Freepers make me chuckle
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8
I doubt we can much improve upon that, and what happens when we apply it to popular culture including such things as "Game of Thrones"?
Lord my dad spent Saturday late afternoon early evening watching that and the Opry and Hee Haw
Hee Haw had scantily clad girls and better music on occasion
Man the gossip on Lawrence Welk show was a soap opera.
My mother....a sinner like her son preferred Elvis ...and Chuck Berry and Little Richard
John Piper is one of my favorite Bible teachers. I just downloaded forty-plus hours of sermons of his onto my phone so I can listen as I return to doing regular exercise.
I appreciate his point here. I’ve been far too tolerant with myself about the things I let myself watch. Game of Thrones happens to not be one of them. I recently tried to watch the first episode of season 1 because so many people talk about how great it is. I couldn’t even finish that one.
But Christians do not just watch this stuff to fit in. We also watch because, like everyone else, we like to be entertained. I don’t think that is wrong innately (though I’m open to being proved wrong), but certainly no one disputes that it has the potential to become a Trojan horse these days. Seems like most Hollywood productions contain obligatory anti-Christian content.
However, there has been a trend lately to create more quality Christian films. I put the Kendrick brothers’ films in this category even if the production value is not on par with Hollywood. Perhaps the solution is for more Christians to spend time creating quality content versus just being consumers of it.
There are many who will mock Piper on this, even some on this forum. Some are ignorant and proud, thinking they are immune to being negatively influenced. Some are not even born-again Christians, so they’ve got bigger issues to worry about. Some consider themselves Christian but could care less about the heart of God on such issues.
I hope you send your kids to their rooms.
Im flawed
Yes
But I make up for it.
I think God will likely say Charlie well overlook you watching Game of Thrones and smoking weed and liking The Rolling Stones and being a bit of rake until my wife of whom Ive been faithful from day one 20 something years now
I do a lot of Godly things most folks arent up to Ive observed...doing right when it has a high personal price.
Im prepared to be judged...by God
Not fellow Freepers
(Not directed at u)
But I love my mama.
(see tagline for further information)
This song was being piped in to the room when I was born.
Livin' Easy, Livin' Free. Season Ticket On A One Way Ride.
Freepers make me chuckle.
Life is a carousel, old chum.
Come to the cabaret.
This is a convenient but superficial rhetorical device, simplistic and legalistic.
I know professing Christians who were home schooled, who are raising their own children thus, and who watch no television at all. Yet they embrace homoerotic faux marriage if it is based upon “love.”
The problem of morality in what I call Churchianity goes much deeper and much wider than this.
When I was young, my parents denounced all rock music in similar fashion - yet they had no objection to listening to carnal Frank Sinatra sing, “I did it my way.”
I’m beginning to think that the only thing we should be watching on tv is quality Christian programming, clean documentaries, and the news (and precious little of THAT). And the same goes with the internet. I literally waste hours every day checking for news stories all day, when I could just as effectively wait and catch up in less than an hour, at the end of the day.
What’s the worst thing that could happen if we just plain STOPPED watching everything but those items? Imagine the benefits!
I saw about 30 seconds of GOT, which happened to be a scene in which a child of about 6 or so, crawled up in his characters mothers lap and started nursing from her breast. The look on his face was carnal and knowing. That was enough for me. It disgusts me the things producers of movies and tv require children to say and do, and I am appalled that parents allow it.
Someone told me that the young woman in Last Tango In Paris, says was not told about how the infamous sodomy scene was to be played, and that she was actually sodomized. I never saw the movie, and never will, but I don’t doubt it
I love sex, but I don’t want to watch anyone having sex, even if it IS just acting. I think that is a perversion. (Watching). Sex is sacred and meant for a husband and wife. And I don’t care who thinks I’m weird.
The new so called Comedies are particularly insulting.
I’ve been saying, after watching them once and never again, that I never knew that sex was so FUNNY.
And guess what...it ain’t. Watching old Bob Newhart series, it is amazing no eff word, no sex, little husband/wife bickering, and yet..very FUNNY.
If you don’t like it; don’t watch it.
See how simple that was. No need to preach to others on what they should or shouldn’t do. Do you like being told what to do by strangers on the Internet?
I dont think youre weird
Ive known all kinds of girls
Including like you
Its personal taste
Its about 70/30 in my experience yes over no
Those that liked porn didnt like so called couples porn oddly
Sex is pretty private as to likes and dislikes
What does bother me is today high school girls act worse than boys
I have five kids
Girl 29
Girl 27
Boy 19
Boy 16
Boy 11
What I hear would curl your hair
Its a shame
A dearth-of girls with any pretense of discretion
A consequence of feminism encouraging women to be like men
In this case a like men on Caligulas barge
Well, for what it is worth, the violence and sex is toned down once the show became much more popular somewhere in season 3...there is more “suggestive sex” but there is still some - just done in a different way.
There is NO decision Christians can make “on their own.”
That is not the way this thing works.
The most casual perusal of the New Testament confirms that.
... and do not take that and run to an equally false implication that we just let Piper or any other man determine the standards. That is not what Piper is saying here.
Look, if you just want to be your own God and determine moral standards in an autonomous bubble, by all means, do so. Just don’t call it “Christian” and fool yourself into thinking you can slap a bible verse or two on it and it will become so.
Piper is on to something. He is NOT saying you should go into the desert and escape depravity that way. It is something deeper and actually more difficult than the two polar extremes of legalism and license. It might pay to go the sources he is quoting and evaluate.
