According to the CDC, kissing bugs are blood-sucking insects that feed on animals and humans. Their nickname comes from their tendency to bite faces.

The CDC estimates that there are 300,000 cases of Chagas in the U.S., with most of those contracted in other countries. But the family of the girl who was bit had not traveled outside the country recently, the statement said.

IIRC from my entomology class (several decades ago) kissing bugs (aka cone nosed blood suckers) are a subset of the family of assassin bugs.

Chagas' disease is spread by the bug (and these are true "bugs") pooping on the bite wound after the bite. If bitten, clean that wound, and disinfect if possible. .

“Chagas disease is not considered curable. Some victims develop disabling heart and intestinal complications over time. However, investigators in Argentina suggest a 90% parasitologic cure rate in babies if treatment is given within the first year of life.”
