Medical School (Psychiatrist) is an extremely harsh environment
Everyone who has gone through Internship comes out... changed
It is hard to explain, but the closest similar process is active combat
Most physicians are examples of PTSD to some degree
PhD Psychologist is a very different trading path
Like: Doctor, heal thyself.
When I was an undergraduate the pysch majors fell into 2 categories - no exceptions!
1. In it to solve their own emotional problems. This was almost exclusively female - usually “Daddy issues”,
2. Party - Easiest major on campus! (PhysEd - you might actually have to run a lap or something!) This category much smaller then the first one & almost exclusively male!
Anyone here ever met children of psychiatrists who weren’t nuts?
Good point. I think that they do need to be invested to some degree in your well being, though. And not paid.
They undergo an intense series of the most sophisticated tests to determine if they are insane. And if they are, they are qualified to their licenses.
Had a good friend who invented, or was an early advocate, of Vietnam Flashback Syndrome. He, for reasons known only to himself, decided to viciously beat a fellow, and did so. Instead of running away, he remained on the scene and went into his well thoughtout ‘act’. He was sent for psychological evaluation and found to suffer from “Vietnam Flashback Syndrome” (Later evolved to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder...I make NO claims as to the validity of any psychological disorders whatsoever). He spent maybe 6 months in a psychiactric hospital, where he was “cured”, or “rehabilitated” and was released, without being charged for any crime whatsoever, which was his plan from the beginning.
Now, for the good part...I’ve actually seen him do this, and I have to tell you, it’s an absolute hoot to see.
He’d go into a bar and amiably engage some fellow in conversation, all smiles, laughter, and good humor, until he could get his newly met companion to say “You’re crazy,” or “you’re nuts,” or “you’re outta your mind”, or anything along those lines...then he’d errupt. “What did you say? Did you call me crazy? CRAZY??? I’M NOT CRAZY!!! I HAVE PAPERS TO PROVE I’M NOT CRAZY!...and he’d whip out his release forms from the psychiactric hospital...YOU SEE THIS!!! THESE ARE MY RELEASE FORMS FROM THE HOSPITAL!!! YOU GOT ANYTHING LIKE THIS??? MAYBE YOU’RE THE ONE THAT’S CRAZY!!! I’M NOT! DON’T YOU DARE CALL ME CRAZY! ANY OF YOU HERE GOT PAPERS THAT PROVES YOU’RE SANE??? HUH??? I DO!!! DON’T YOU CALL ME CRAZY!
You can’t believe the look on people’s faces that have just been confronted by an irate man who is waving around his release papers from the funny farm. I’ve been in bars where shots were fired, that didn’t empty out as fast as after B’s “CRAZY” routine.
A hoot!...for those of us warped enough to be predisposed to laugh at this sort of thing...a real hoot.
There is an saying in the Psy community.
If you meet someone who is messed up, there is a high probability they studied Psy extensively in College.
They also say Psychologists make poor patents.
I’ve encountered two Psychologists in a social setting who, without my permission started to interrogate me when I said I’m pretty much a secure person who no longer needs a Psychologist to figure myself out.
One asked me if I was a Psychologist.
I’ve met one good one but for the most part, they are people who have a need to control others.
A GOOD Psychologist acts like a mirror
They encourage people to Talk to themselves
And by doing so, learning to see differently and
Not stay behind walls and masks of obsessions
They do not tell you how or what to think
The consequences of living behind masks and walls, blinding yourself
can be understood by reading a CS Lewis book Til We Have Faces

It will break your heart, and give it back to you
Where they can screw up more people's lives directly and indirectly.
Yes, he was. Seems a number of people wondered about him, but he was always saved by political correctness.
I don’t have any.
I’ve only met 2 and both were loony-toons.
I’ve worked in the medical field for 40 plus years and have been acquainted with many psychiatrists, psychologists and assorted therapists. I knew one that was a sexual predator of children. His specialty was treating children. Two others I knew were just plain sexual predators.
I also knew maybe a dozen (over many years) that were kind, insightful and gifted. They had a knack for healing. They inspired patients to face their demons and get better. They were the exception in my experience. I observed power-driven, bitter doctors who were spiritually exhausted, and some who were far, far sicker than their patients.
As to your specific question, the answer is absolutely yes, of course. And some of the most clever at masking and hiding their own symptoms.
I’m interested in why you asked the question.
...for the most part, they are people who have a need to control others.
Perfect profession for that. Add to it being a progressive, and oh wow.
Every mental health professional I’ve ever met got into the field trying to figure out their own problems.
The old college joke about psych majors is largely true. People go into it as a major to figure out what’s wrong with them. The only ones who graduate with that major never figured it out.
I don’t believe Nidal Hasan exhibited sociopathic or psychopathic traits.
A psychopaths is not affected by stress in the same way psychotypical people are, so it would stand to reason he would be able to handle the pressure of medical school quite easily. At the same time, he would probably adopt a facade of PTSD as a socially acceptable mask.
You, unfortuately, got one of the dipshits.
My ex, my son and I went to one mandatory family counseling session. After that, she said, You to should continue in counseling. I dont want to, because it is all both of yours falt!
That is when I got counselors for my son and I and I got the best damned lawyer in town! Between them and the Sheriffs department, she was arrested for abusing our son and out of the house. I got custody in order for her to avoid jail and permanent record, and the next day, we moved out of the state.
