Yesterday, in what is now Festival, there was a small slide regarding the origin and or meaning of the word ‘droog’ or ‘droogie’ in A Clockwork Orange. I happened to learn by reading last night that the Russian word for ‘friend’ is ‘drug’. I assume it is pronounced ‘droog’.

Lots of the language in Clockwork Orange was bastardized Russian. Burgess was saying, subtly I think, that the Soviet Union ( written at the height of the Cold War) had taken over England or had HUGE influence in some other way in the future.
