Lori Loughlin pleads not guilty in college admissions scam

It turns out that trusting the word of a con artist might not always be the best choice. Following Lori Loughlin and husband Mossimo Giannulli's decision to plead not guilty to the charges facing them in connection to the college admissions scandal on Monday, a source close to the 54-year-old actress tells ET that she feels like those who orchestrated the scheme misled her about the severity of her involvement. "[Lori and her husband] claim they were under the impression they might be breaking rules, but not laws," the source says. "They feel they were manipulated by those involved and are planning that as part of their defense." "They realize how serious the charges are, but feel that once the judge hears their story he will see they had no bad intentions," the source adds.

Routine prosecutorial abuse is mostly not political but reflexive and personality driven, a matter of going too far trying to assert and express dominance over criminal defendants and their attorneys. Woe unto defendants who trifle with and waste the time of a prosecutor who can add more charges just to break a defendant's will or run up the sentence.

A senior judge whom I worked for told me of his role in prosecuting a notorious rape-murder case, getting the death penalty, and then, years later, as a judge, calling the governor to urge commutation to life. As a prosecutor, he had a long antagonism with the defense lawyer and, determined to stick it to him, over-tried the case.

The defendant was convicted and got the death penalty, with a commutation years later. Virtually no one ever knew that it was the prosecutor turned judge who convinced the governor that the death penalty was not merited.
