Pope Francis blamed Europe and the United States for the deaths of children in Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan, saying Saturday that wealthy Western countries fuel conflicts by selling weapons in war zones.

Speaking to students and teachers of Milan’s San Carlo Institute, Francis said the reason there are so many wars around the world is “the rich Europe and America sell weapons … used to kill children and kill people.”

Without such firepower, the pope added, there wouldn’t have been war in countries such as Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria. .

“A country that produces and sells weapons has on its conscience the death of every child and the destruction of each family,” Francis said. …

Yet the weapon of choice is the AK.

I guess the pope missed the news in Africa when tribes regularly hack each other to death with machetes. He should get out more spend some time there.

The Pope can pretend that if the U.S. and Europe had no weapons that nobody else would have either, and that none of the wars he speaks of would have been fought with others weapons. It is pretense, not rational judgement, anymore than gun control is about eliminating killers.

The killers, whether those that make wars or those that murder don’t give a fig about morality, the Pope’s, the world’s or their own, and if we read the bible correctly they will be with us until the end of all things as we know it. Our obligation is to be prepared for that fact, not ignore it.

If the Pope’s appeasement (disarmament) would have been the west’s achievement, the killings from war would have been much worse than it had been.

Oh yeah, it's the weapon, not evil, greed, lust for power, jealousy, fear.... Yeah, if only we'd take away the means people would be nice to each other. Everyone remembers how before there were guns no one was killed or oppressed by sword wielding despots...

I would expect better from a leader.

Someone needs to ask him how the killing took place in Rwanda.

"An estimated 800,000 Rwandans died during ethnic violence over a brief span of 100 days between April and July 1994.[5] Most of the dead were Tutsis, and most of those who perpetrated the violence were Hutus....The church leaders had close ties with the political leaders, and after the genocide began, the church leaders called on the population to support the new interim government, the very government supporting the genocide....On November 20, 2016, the Catholic Church in Rwanda released a statement signed by nine bishops apologizing for the role of its members in the genocide of 1994."

Yes. Interesting, that. But the Pope is propagandizing, not stating facts.
