The letter is a scam. I keep getting calls to my unlisted cell phone offering to reduce my student loan debt. I have no student loan debt.

If you are loaded up with credit card debt, you need to get on board with Dave Ramsey.

You showed THEM, all right. Bet they won’t be back to try that scam on you again any time soon.

One of the best things wife and I did was to attend a Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University about 20 years ago. That made a huge difference in our financial situation.

I finally put my cell on Do Not Disturb with exceptions for numbers in my contact list. I know there is a block function but the telemarketers keep changing their numbers so that function is next to useless.

I no longer get three or four calls a day about reducing my non-existent credit card debt. The ‘IRS’ isn’t threatening to have the “cops” arrest me. I am missing out on some really revolutionary pain treatment options though.

The particular info you got sounds like a scam.

However, whenever any legit debt reduction proposal is legitimately carried out, be forewarned it is not all a bed of roses.

To the financial system and the IRS, relieving any part of your debt is treated like giving you money. The amount by which the debt is relieved is notified to the IRS as income on a 1099, and you will have to pay taxes on it. That amount has to be added to the rest of your income when you file federal income tax forms for the tax year during which the debt relief took place.

I want to punch this guy in the face when I see him on TV.

Looks like a TOTAL SCAM to me.

I have some minor disagreement with his methodology, but between Ramsey and nothing, it’s an easy choice. And a lot more folks will have access to his system than to the details I recommend.

As to my cell phone - I don’t even answer when my employer calls. I’ll respond to texts from them if I see them, but they know to email my home if they really want to get in touch with me.
